Hippopotamus Films has signed China's Wang Wenjie to star in "Wushu," helmed by Antony Szeto ("DragonBlade").
"Wushu" (Chinese for martial arts) is about a teen who tries to brush up on his martial arts skills while mending ties with his father. Shooting will be complete by December or January.
The $1.5 million pic will be looking for financing at Hong Kong's FilMart this week, said Colette Koo, producer. Golden Network will provide coin and will distribute for some territories, Koo said.
Hippopotamus has retained Wang as a talent, with talent agent China Kingway Communications looking after him in China.
Hippopotamus also has Szeto's micro-budget "Jessica Caught on Tape." Pic has gone back for a rewrite to feature two lead femmes instead of one, Koo said. Pic also will take on a second director: London-based Rosa Fong.
Pic will star Evelyn Ng ("A Wicked Tale,") also known as Maria Ng, who is based in Singapore and Taipei.
